Start with why LED
Hardware that never comes down has to handle weather that seasonal strands never see. Traditional bulbs are designed to come down. LEDs run cool, draw little power and do not have a filament to break, which is what makes leaving them up a reasonable idea at all.None of this means you need to understand electronics. But it is worth asking what the channel is, how it mounts and how it is wired, since the detail in the answer says a lot. The people who explain it plainly are usually the ones who install it carefully.
What the channel does
Each diode sits in an aluminum track, rather than clipped along an edge. That channel hides the hardware and aims the output. It gets matched to the color of your trim or fascia as part of the order, so the daytime house does not change.
The control question
Each LED in the run is addressed on its own. Without individual control you get one color across every foot of the run. With it you get alternating colors, movement and transitions. The capability sits there unused most of the year, and then Christmas arrives.Ask to see the daytime look of a completed job, since darkness flatters every install and daylight flatters only the careful ones.
What else gets installed
Behind the visible run there is a wire path, a power connection and a controller. Wire routing is where careful work shows, because a rushed job leaves it visible. Ask how the wiring is concealed while it is still a conversation.
The long view
Permanent means permanent, which is the appeal and also the responsibility. Careful work stays clean. A sloppy install becomes visible the moment the lights are off. The hardware is the easier half. The install is the rest.
Weather is what the hardware is up against
Nothing about a permanent system is easy on the equipment. Summer heat builds up along a sunlit fascia, and heat is the enemy of anything with a circuit in it. Moisture is the other test. The failure points are almost never the LEDs.
Dimming
The output can be turned down. Full brightness is for December, and it is far more light than an ordinary evening wants. The everyday level is usually modest, and that is what runs most nights.
Getting a design
Specifications read the same from every company.
